Ross Fish

Ross Fish is a synthesizer designer and audio engineer based in Portland, Oregon. Since 2014, he has been the creative force behind Moffenzeef Modular, a boutique music technology company known for its unconventional Eurorack modules, standalone instruments, and experimental software. After a decade of cultivating a dedicated cult following, Ross joined 4ms Company in 2024, where he contributes to the design and DSP programming of current and upcoming products.

In addition to his work in instrument design, Ross is an experienced audio engineer and music producer. Whether it’s production, songwriting, tracking, mixing, mastering, or live sound, he has worked with a wide range of artists—from completely unknown newcomers to those signed to established indie labels. Rather than being tied to a specific genre, Ross enjoys collaborating with anyone, at any professional level, who has a deep love of music and a genuine care for the craft. Like many engineers, he also composes and records his own music, released on his ad hoc label Moffentapes.

Outside the studio, Ross is an active member of Portland’s underground and emerging klezmer scene, performing regularly as a double bassist. Weekend appearances at 80th birthday parties and afternoon retirement home gigs are not uncommon.

Ross Fish and FabFilter

The Pro-Q4 has been an indispensable tool for cleaning up tracking sessions across any genre I work with. A lot of the projects I take on are recorded in less-than-ideal conditions (untreated home studios with prosumer gear). Having the Pro-Q4 as a subtractive EQ has been instrumental in minimizing unwanted room resonances and the artifacts of intense proximity effect often found with “that” microphone.

I recently picked up the Saturn 2 for saturation duties, and it’s really blown my expectations out of the water. I can dial in subtle, warm tape- or transformer-like overtones, or push things to the extreme when needed. I was considering investing in a very expensive hardware unit for this purpose, but I’ve completely changed my tune—FabFilter just works!
