Robbie Nelson
Robbie Nelson is a Grammy and MPG award winning engineer/mixer. Notable work includes Beck (three Grammy's including best album), Birdy, Rumer, Amy Macdonald, Rae Morris, Sarah Brightman and Jarvis Cocker.
After starting his career under legendary producer Mike Hedges at the equally legendary Wessex studios in London. Robbie then went on to join RAK studios London where he's been based for over 12 years working on everything from Pop to Rock to EDM and world music. He now splits his time between RAK and working freelance.
"I love recording with character, make sure you've got the basic great tone sure but then just add something odd or strange, especially on drums. I grew up listening to the Flaming lips, Mercury Rev, Beck and the like so I come from an indie perspective. I hate hearing boring drum sounds on records .You tend to be able to get away with experimenting more on pop as well, there's no reason not to have interesting sounds going on underneath. Even if no one else notices because they're all just listening to the vocal, at least I know that it was well put together and interesting".
Robbie Nelson and FabFilter
"I was initially turned on to FabFilter by an engineer friend of mine Mike Horner who'd been raving about them for ages but it's sometimes hard to spend time on sessions trying out new plug-ins and disrupting workflow. Then when producer Rob Shirakbari was using them on the album by Rumer we were mixing for Warners I had no excuse not to dive right in. I'm so glad I did as I've been using them on everything since then. The FabFilter Pro-Q 2 especially is such a good mix tool. The interfaces are so clear and easy to use it enables you to zone right in exactly where you need it. I can't wait to really get stuck in to the rest of the collection to add to the repertoire."
