ProQ4 causing big lag in ProTools when sliding clips left and right

Hi,

I'm running ProTools 2025.12.1 on Windows 10. When I have ProQ4 inserted on a track, Protools has a lag when dragging clips left and right. The more tracks with ProQ4, the more lag. I have a session with 54 tracks and ProQ4 is inserted on all of them. When I group the tracks to edit and slide, ProTools takes about 10 seconds from when I let go of my mouse until the tracks complete moving to the new location.

This behavior happens even when ProQ4 is inactive on a track. If I remove all the instances of ProQ4, sliding clips dramatically improves and behaves normally. Other FabFilter plugins don't cause the lagging issue as much. I have ProC2 inserted and PT has no lag.

I've tried turning off delay comp, change track view to blocks, nothing helps. I've done a lot of experimenting to narrow it down to ProQ4. It must be taking CPU time or something even while inactive.

Any suggestions? For now I'm doing all my editing without ProQ4 in the session and I'll load it for mixing if I need it.

Thanks.

Hi David,

Do these instances of Pro-Q have any automation written, and Automation follows Edit is enabled?

In that case all automation needs to be copied along with the clip. If you have all bands of every instance enabled for automation, on 54 tracks, that can quickly become quite a lot of data for Pro Tools to copy over at once.

Or is that even without automation written?

All parameters are enabled in my default Q4 settings but I have not written any automation. If I take 50 tracks, create an instance of ProQ4 on all of them (with all parameters enabled) and make all the plugins inactive, ProTools seriously lags when dragging. There shouldn't be any automation written in the above steps.

Is it possible to have this forum email the thread creator when there is a reply? I had no idea you replied until I thought to log in. It would be great if an email could get sent where there is a reply to read.

Thanks,
David

Hi Daniel,

Our forum is pretty bare bones, and unfortunately does not have a notification function. We do have some features we want to implement to the forum, but somehow making new plug-ins always seem to indulge us. Your request has been noted though.

I just tried here in a session. 50 tracks without any inserts will give me a lag of a fraction of a second between releasing the mouse and the clips losing their yellow outline. When inserting a plug-in to all 50 tracks, this lag time is slightly longer, but not more than half a second.

I tried this with an empty session as well as my template, but this does not seem to make a difference.

Would it be possible to send over a session that I can try out to see if it behaves the same? You can send it over to info@fabfilter.com.

Thanks

Hi Ralph,

Hi Ralph, I will send over a session. You need clips to move in all 50 tracks. My Windows 10 machine is an older build from 2018 and not as snappy as a modern computer but still the lag is very noticeable. And again ProQ4 with all parameters enabled while active / inactive makes the difference. Other plugins not a noticeable difference.

Hi Ralph, I emailed you a session and a link to a session with audio clips and a video demonstrating the issue. Thank you for your help.
