Pro Q 4 UI requests: Interface Pop Up prevention, Band Creation Methods, Instance View Tweaks, Preset Menu Static.
Hi,
I upgraded to Pro Q 4 and have a few interface issues I'd like to bring up. In short, I'm missing Pro Q 3 for a lot of simplicity and functionality which I hope to see in future Pro Q versions and updates.
MAIN POP UP TOGGLE:
First, the main pop up when clicking and dragging a bands node can't be disabled. It's big and blocks the frequency view. I'd like a UI option to toggle hiding the pop up with Bell/Freq/Gain/Q/Stereo options to free up visuals. I use the NOB control to tweak parameters and also mouse click and drag and both force this part of the UI to be visible all the time.
BAND CREATION:
Band creation for LPF and HPF isn't as fluid as it used to be. I want it to auto create an LPF any time I double click in the final band of the UI, but currently I have to double click below -15dB to create the LPF. This is an issue partially due to the first complaint that the bulky part of the UI often prevent such an area from being quickly accessible and it gets in the way. In previous versions it seems double clicks anywhere above 15khz made LPF and anywhere below 20 hz made an HPF and that's what I'd want back in Q4. LPF below first band and HPF when above the 20k band. Perhaps a shift or alt + click modifier could be added for user shortcuts so we can all adapt to our preferred methods of high and low control without being stuck to specific bands to create such curves?
INSTANCE VIEW:
Hitting escape to exit instance view isn't intuitive and is problematic as a way to adjust instances. I'd like to be able to click the name of the track to enter a single view of that track or shift+click (or other modifier + click) an instance to quickly dive in fully. That way it's a single click to enter a view instead of . In reaper hitting escape exits the plugin view so I'm one click away from closing the entire interface with the current escape key command. One other idea is to always leave the bottom part of the interface in the middle where you both enter and exit instance mode so I can just click it to go in and out of instance mode.
Instance view also shrinks instead of filling the full screen real estate dynamically. This makes it super small to see each instance and isn't useful so I just leave both instances up instead of using instance mode. If I could have it fill, or actually dive into another one with obvious color change, that would change.
I'd like pinning in instance view to hold the zoom level of that EQ so it stays as it is when pinned. I'm focusing on the pinned track and don't want it adjusting in any way.
I'd like the instance that is the actual track instance colored, or obvious in some way.
I regularly add nodes on accident navigating between instances and would like some key command to select like "shift" or bar to click for selection, or hover color when selecting so it's obvious when it's been clicked.
PRESET DROPDOWN:
This feels awkward shuffled to the left. When I click it I want it under my mouse to quickly drag down to settings. Pro q 3 had this perfect, but pro q 4 staggers it to the left with extra parameters. I'd like these presets where Pro q 3 had them. The way things expand to the right for submenus dynamically also hurts the certainty of where I'm clicking for presets and it annoys me regularly. I'd prefer an option for a static dropdown menu instead of a dynamically moving menu. That way it's a simple click, scroll down, choose it with reliability every time.
EQ MATCH:
The new eq match is in the instance window, but in many cases I've found that view too small and limiting to make the right choices. I miss it being a part of the regular UI with full view and decision making ability. The shrunken view is too compromised in size for EQ match. EQ Match in Pro Q 4 also doesn't show any bands at the bottom for precision control because instances don't show them.
SUMMARY:
Overall, I still love PRO Q! Pro Q 4 is neat, but Pro Q 3 hit the sweet spot for me on fast EQ choices without too much UI clutter while Pro Q 4 added a bit too much dynamic elements for me to work as quickly. I'll jump back to Q3 for speed and hope that Pro Q 4 can get some QOL updates for options that make it as rock solid as Q3 for me.
Agree about all of these points. Especially EQ match seems more clunky than Pro-Q 3 where it was part of the main UI instead of having to going to the instance view
