64+ Tracks with Q4 will crash ProTools when writing automation
Hi,
I'm on macOS 14.7.3, PT 2024.10.2 and Pro-Q 4.0.2
MacStudio M2 Ultra, 128 GB RAM
I make a new session, add 64 (or more) mono tracks, add an Q4 to each track (default vanilla settings). Then set Automation to Write on all tracks.
Press Play, press Stop. ProTools Crash.
Please fix. Thank you!
Micha

Hi Micha,
We're aware of this issue, but unfortunately it's not because of a bug in the plug-in. Pro-Q 4 and Pro-Q 4 have lots, lots of parameters. With 24 bands each with over a dozen of parameter, there are over 300 parameters that can be automated. When you enable all of these parameters for automation at once on lots of tracks, this can immediately full up the automation buffer of Pro Tools. Especially if you're using spot automation, which basically means the automation buffer needs to store store values for each parameter.
We are in close contact with Avid, who are looking for a solution. What you can do for the time being is not enable all parameters for automation, but reduce it to e.g. 8 bands.
This was the same with Q3 for years. Unfortunately only automating 8 band requires a ton of of discipline of the entire team as a single double-click in to the interface creates a new band that is then not automated and can cause massive issues in a big post session if the person doping that isn't aware of it.
I was hoping that Q4 would finally offer a limitation to this to avoid massive headaches i post sessions where things need to translate to many people working on the same project and even across studios.
