Spectral EQ for Live/Real-time Applications
First, I just want to say: this is by far the most masterfully-designed plugin I have ever used. Huge respect to your team for pulling this off so beautifully! There is just one feature request that I would like to propose that would make a huge difference for people using this plugin on stage:
I know that Spectral EQ requires linear-phase mode to be enabled – and that's simply an unavoidable technical constraint due to the FFT algorithm. However, there are many situations where the exact timing of the spectral shaping is not critical – such as slow, ambient pad sounds with held notes – and I wouldn't mind at all if the Spectral EQ reaction time were simply delayed by 100ms or so.
In other words, I would love an option to use Spectral EQ while keeping the plugin in Zero-Latency mode, where it simply delays the reactivity of the spectral shaping instead of delaying the entire signal chain.
When I first saw the teaser videos, I got so excited because I thought I'd finally be able to have a zero latency, low-CPU alternative to "Soothe" for my live performances.
Would this be technically possible to implement at some point in the future?
Thank you FabFilter Team! :)
That would definitely be possible, but there are only few cases where you wouldn't mind a ~100 ms delay in your signal without compensation, so I'm afraid it probably wouldn't be that generally useful... and could very likely lead to confusion.
Cheers,
Thanks for the reply Frederik. But, respectfully, I have to disagree. In the Live Audio world, 100ms is an eternity... And I'm guessing there are plenty of people who use Pro-Q 4 for live applications, specifically with Ableton Live.
I've already talked with two other Ableton Live users who were hoping for this same feature. Just sayin', it might be worth adding it as an option to the drop-down menu where you select "Zero-Latency, Linear Phase... etc".
Thank you!
