Bug in Twin 3 Windows Installer - All plug-ins and no help file installed in help folder
There's a bug in the Windows installer for Twin 3. All the plug-ins are installed into the help folder instead of into their correct folders and regardless of which plug-in types are selected. Furthermore the help file is not installed into the help folder. Alsom Readme.txt and Uninst.exe are installed to the help folder.
Steps to Reproduce:
(This just one of the permutations that reproduces essentially the same bug.)
1 Untick 'Install the VST 2 pluq-in version of FabFilter Twin 3' and leave 'VST 2 Plug-In Folder' blank.
2 Install the VST 3 plug-in version of FabFilter Twin 3'
1 In FabFilter 3 Setup, untick or don't tick the 'Install the AAX plug-in version of FabFilter Twin 3'.
2 Either specify a Destination Folder or leave it to the default, usually 'C:\Program Files\FabFilter\Twin 3'.
3 Either do or do not tick the 'Create a shortcut in the Start Menu' option.
4 Click the Install button.
Expected Result:
A PDF help file should be installed into the destination folder.
The VST3 plugin should be installed into the mandatory VST3 folder, which may not be changed. This is usually 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3'.
No other plug-in types should be installed, as I deselected them in the installer.
Actual Result:
Instead of the help file, plug-ins of all three types are installed to the help folder.
Furthermore Readme.txt and Uninst.exe are installed to the help folder. The instructions in the installer refer specifically to the help file:
"Destination Folder
Setup needs to know where to install the help file for FabFilter Twin 3. Please type a folder below, or use the Browse button to choose a folder.
If you are unsure, it is recommended to use the default folder shown below."
I selected a non-default folder, one in which I keep many manuals. So Readme.txt and Uninst.exe should be installed to the default folder, usually 'C:\Program Files\FabFilter\Twin 3', regardless of the destination folder specified for the help file.
One of the problems raised in
www.fabfilter.com/forum/topic/7218/query-default-preset-location-for-twin-3 is covered by this bug report.
I can see a few typos in my initial post. I wish I could go back and fix them, but that appears not to be supported on this forum. Hopefully the meaning is clear anyway!
Hi Simon,
The installer puts all plugin files in the destination folder, so you can manually copy them to any VST2 destination folder if needed. In addition, it also copies them to the VST2, VST3 and AAX folders. On Windows, we install the help file in .chm (Windows help) format. So in short, the installer is working as designed. :)

Hello Frederik,
Yes, my mistake, sorry. I missed seeing the VST3 plug-in in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3 (related to the way I had File Explorer sorted, though that's no excuse!). Yet there it is. And, you are right, I missed seeing the help file because I was expecting a PDF rather than a CHM.
One minor design quibble remains. The instruction for Destination Folder says 'Setup needs to know where to install the help file for FabFilter Twin 3.' But the folder is not just for the help file. I mistakenly thought it was. So I selected a folder containing FabFilter PDF manuals that I had previously downloaded.
May I suggest a clarification of the instruction? Something like 'Setup needs to know where to install the help file and other support files for FabFilter Twin 3.'
Cheers,
Simon
Hi Simon,
Good point, we'll look into that!
