(Digital Performer) timeless output stops when no signal is present

Hi,

I am trying out the Timeless demo for the first time, using Digital Performer 5.11 as the host on a G5. I quite like the plug-in, but I found that instead of the delay ringing out at the end of an audio phrase (for instance, a vocal line), when the input is silent, so is the output.

I was using Timeless on a long Carnatic vocal line that I'd cut into smaller phrases, all on the same track. the delay (starting with the 'Sea Shore' preset) was rich and creamy, but rather jarringly disappears at the end of the phrases.

Is this a limitation of the demo? A problem with DP (which does seem to have a few problems with AUs)? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks

Hi Colin,

It sounds like a problem in Digital Performer, but we'll have a look at it.

If it's any help, this doesn't happen in DP4.61.

Thanks for checking into the problem. I did find similar problems in DP 5.1 but not the same problem.

In 5.1, the buffer wouldn't clear when a sequence was stopped and would play back a small burst of buffered effect which was noticeable when playing back from a different spot. While investigating this, MOTU techs found a delay wouldn't ring out when a sequence was stopped as it should. 5.11 Seemed to solve the noise burst; perhaps there'll be another fix soon.

However, the other delays I tried on the same track didn't drop out as Timeless did. I imagine there's something happening between the two programs that has exposed another bug. Just guessing, though.

Oh, and you should know that I decided to try Timeless on Dave's recommendation --thanks, Dave! I'm sure this will be a great tool in my arsenal eventually! :-)

DP has had a similar problem in the past (I can't remember which version). It resulted in reverb tails being cut off.

Colin, I haven't upgraded to DP5.x so I could be barking up the wrong tree here, but have you tried toggling the "Run in Realtime" option for Timeless? Don't know if it would make any difference but maybe it's worth a try?

Hi Colin,

The problem with the sound being cut-off is probably a bug in DP.

The other problem however (sound remaining in the buffer at sequence stop that is played when the sequence continues) is a small bug in our Audio Unit implementation, which will be solved in the next update release!

Cheers,

Hi Dave,

Yes, I did try the "Always Run In real Time" option, which helps with the buffer problems, but not with the effect dropping out when a soundbite ends. It's probably time to tell MOTU about this -- it'll go along with the other problems already reported (the buffer glitch and effects not ringing out when a sequence is stopped). I like DP 5.11; for the most part it's an improvement, except for these little bugs... ;-)

Hi Floris,

I have reported a couple of other bugs in this release of DP and I will add the effect being cut off to the list. I know they are working on the glitchy buffer problem (the work-around is to choose "Always Run In Real Time" for the first plugin on a track). At least I knpw it's not a limitation of the demo, and is probably not a problem with the plugin itself...

And thanks for taking the time to reply on a Saturday! Dave said your support was good -- I'll second that.
