What happens to my old Q2 instances when installing Q3?

I've had a couple bad experiences (not with FabFilter, though!) when upgrading to newer versions of plugins over the years when I've sometimes forgotten that presets and, more importantly, old instances of the plugins, scattered throughout my saved projects can be lost.

I'm wondering how installing Q3 would effect this.

Does it run fine next to Q2? Or does it recall the parameters and settings from old Q2 instances in older projects if only Q3 is installed?

I'm guessing it can be used alongside Q2, but becuase of past blunders on my side (and sometimes bad information from developers), I want to be on the safe side.
