Ableton hiccups on Twin 2 preset change

Hi,

In my current liveset, I run Twin 2 as the main synth. It uses 6 presets I made, that I can select from my master keyboard (it sends Program Change messages).

I've noticed sometimes (but not always), that the whole Ableton set hiccups (goes silent for about a second) when I change presets.

I run a pretty low latency, but then again upping the latency is not a solution because it would make the set unplayable. All other actions (playing the synth, play any other part in the set) works flawless with these settings, it's just the preset switching that I can't trust onstage.

Is this a known problem? Any solutions?

Thanks!

Bas

following are the details of my setup.
Macbook Pro (old version), 2,5 GHz core 2 duo
OS X 10.5.8
Ableton 8.2.1
Twin 2 VST plugin (AU has the same behaviour I think)
Latency: 190 to 210 samples tested (about 5 ms in and out)
Plugin latency (in the "CPU" tab): 128 samples

Hi Bas,

At the moment, when Twin 2 receives a program change message, it needs to read the next preset file from disk and update all parameters accordingly. Reading from disk is not real-time friendly and therefore can cause hiccups.

We'll consider ways to improve this in the future. For now though, would it be possible for you to use multiple Twin 2 instances on separate tracks, and switch to the track with the preset you want to use?

Cheers,

Frederik (FabFilter)

to add to the previous suggestion,

in Live you can place the two (or more) instances of Twin2 in a single rack with multiple chains, rather than across several seperate tracks.

midi/key map of the chain selector and adjust the ranges to create smooth morphs or abrupt switches.

Alright, nice to know how the problem comes to be. A fix would be great :)

I guess multiple Twins would be an option (as of now, that would mean 6 of them, with more when I build on the short set I have now). I'm keeping latency as low as possible to ensure I can make tight loops in Ableton... I'm pretty sure I will need to up the latency a lot to accomodate 6 or more Twins.

On the other hand it seems like the only safe option. I'll try it out tomorrow.

Thanks for the quick reply, if there's a fix later, I would be very grateful! It would seem for a preset switch, Twin wouldn't need to process too much data... too bad it still manages to disrupt the total set from playing as it is now.
