Spectral on/off automation lane in ProTools?

Hi FF,

can you tell me which automation lane in PT refers to turning spectral mode on/off for a band? It seems to automate but I can't find out which automation lane in PT is responsible for switching a band to spectral.

Thanks!

Hans

This is set by the spectral enabled parameters per band, e.g. Band 1 Spectral Enabled, and so on. However, if you make a band non-dynamic by setting its Dynamic Range parameter to zero, it will also become non-spectral and might change the latency.

If you don't want the latency to change when turning spectral on and off, you can use Linear Phase processing mode.

Cheers,

Hi Frederic,

I looked everywhere but I can not see that lane in PT2024.10.1. It is being recalled but no lane. I can only see dynamics enable.
Possible bug?

Thanks

Hans

Also only bands 10-24 seems to have the SCLoFreq and SCHiFreq parameters. 1-9 don't.
Very weird. Something seem to be strange. I checked both the automation enable window and the drop down menu of the track.

Hans

Spectral enable is definitely missing here. However the switching is recalled 100%. So strange.

Hans

Me again, I realized that for bands 1-9 the side chain lanes are called "Side Chain Filtering" and "Side Chain Low Filtering" for some other bands they are called "SCHiFreq". But spectral enable is definitely not listed.

Hans

Hi Hans,

Spectral enable is exCluded from automation because it will change the plug-in latency, and therefore give you either a click during playback or sets your signal out of sync.

Ok, weird. On my rig switching spectral on/off automates just fine (and produces clicks and while playing) and yet no apparent lane. Magic or am I missing something?

thanks!

Hans

Not anymore! Was this changed in the .01 release?
This whole spectral thing has some really confusing implications for film mixes and might lead to nobody actually using it or setting up second instances dedicated to spectral usage. If you have 100 tracks and switch sone of them to spectral moving a clip to a different track will instantly turn spectral off leading to a different sound. You have to be really away of what you're doing in Q4 to avoid messing up your whole mix when you switch an instance to spectral as this will change the entire track troughout the timeline.
I'll stick to Q3 for now...

Hans

Hi Hans,

We've gotten more messages from post mixers about this, and we'll see if we can figure something out.

Ralph (FabFilter)

Thanks for looking into it. It's essentially the same dilemma that we had in the past with C2 and the de-esser. This time it's much harder to solve since the spectral mode is not something that post-mixers simply keep in the same mode throughout the entire project so I'm not sure how you'll be able to come up with a solution. When it's automated it will cause clicks and when not it will cause all sorts of other issues when clips are moved to other tracks.
I was also hoping Q4 would introduce a way to lock out custom parameters to be able to lock the entire thing to 7 band of EQ for example. Q3 was already too extreme with 24 bands with regards to slowing down protools and now Q4 hs even MORE parameters. So I really had wished Q4 would spare us the tedious manual removal of bands 8-24 from automation for a post-session. 24 bands of automation lanes can slow down a session to a crawl.

Hans

Hi Hans,

We're aware of the request of less parameters for Pro Tools users. It's on our radar, and we'll see if there is something we can do to accommodate this.
