Saturn 2 – input mastering levels

Saturn 2 – input mastering levels
Looking for some insight on setting input levels for Saturn 2 while using the “Subtle” settings for mastering/main mix bus.
Because Saturn 2 does not really display a numerical meter for input, it is difficult to guess what this level should be. The spectrum display gives one an idea of the input level – but it is not precise.
So, what are the peak levels and/or RMS levels for a mix coming into Saturn 2 when running it in the mastering chain?
Right now, my files are at about -4 db peak level with about -16 db RMS – is this close to where the levels should be?
Thanks!

Hi Phil,

Saturn 2 does not really have a sonic sweetspot for its input level. The harmonics are applied to the signal independent of the level. However, with hotter signals, you need less drive to get the same level of saturation. For example, with Saturn's input at 0dB, output at -16dB and a drive of 20% in the Subtle Tube setting be almost identical to an input of -16dB, output of 0dB and a drive of around 50%.

Your current settings of -4 dB peak and -16 dB RMS are close to optimal for a subtle mastering chain with Saturn 2. As you work, you can adjust slightly depending on how the mix responds, but ensure to avoid over-driving the input to maintain clarity and avoid unwanted distortion. buildnow-gg.io
