Panning issue

Hello,

I am using Pro Q on the master buss to high pass the side image. When I do this, I have noticed that hard panned individual tracks still have some information coming through the side opposite the hard pan. This goes away when I remove the side image high pass. Why does this happen?

Thanks!

Paul

Hi Paul,

That's the nature of Mid-Side processing. The Mid and Side signals are calculated using the following formula's:

Mid = L + R
Side = L - R

This means that signals that are hard panned are also included in the mid signal, but that they are 6dB quieter than signals panned center.

If you remove a part of the frequency from the side signal, these frequencies will still remain in the mid signal, which will come out of both left and right. So Mid-Side EQ'ing can indeed adjust the stereo image of hard panned signals.
