I see that Fabfilter's EQ can be side chained. How does this function once the plugin has received a trigger from an outside source? Does it then activate the eq bands, specific bands, or what?

The side-chain in Pro-Q 2 is only used to visualize its spectrum, and for EQ match purposes. It does not trigger anything or affect normal processing.

But u can use your host to controll the midi inputs. For example in Flstudio. One of the Fl Controller can do many things if u know how to use it.
