No gain reduction in vari-mu mode for C3

There's a bug in C3. No gain reduction when using vari-mu mode. No matter how much I vary the threshold there's nothing happening. Oh I see gain reduction in the plugin's metering but with an external level after C3 it shows no gain reduction. If I switch to another mode I get gain reduction. Anybody else seeing this? There's at least a couple of people over in Gearspace that are seeing this issue. Running in ProTools 2021.6 which uses aax format on a Mac running OSX 10.13.6

same for me on Mac silicon with the vst3 version in Reaper and Cubase (Tahoe 26.2)

Well misery loves company, sadly. I sent an email to FF about this as there's no real way to start a support ticket or to report a bug on their website. I also tried it in Steinberg Wavelab 10 which uses vst format - same thing.

Is this the same Jack that worked at Rockwell?

No sir. My previous day job was as an engineer at Lockheed Martin designing satellite command and control systems. Prior to that I spent a god bit of time on both sides of the glass in studios in the Philly Pa area.

good bit of time not god bit of time; wish we could edit posts here.

hi guys,

When you send an email to us you'll open up a ticket automatically.

I can't seem to reproduce the gain reduction bug in the vari-mu mode. Can anyone send me a small video of the error? Please send it to info@fabfilter.com.

you know, i had a long post written here that i lost because "post message" sent me into a 403 forbidden and i couldn't even retrieve my post, i can't be arsed to write it again.

TLDR: unlike most other modes, VariMu doesn't preserve relative threshold, and unlike other modes where threshold/input can be basically used interchangeably, with VariMu threshold and input dont do the same thing.

Ploki

It's things like this that drive me nuts with Fabfilter documentation. If vari-mu is indeed working as it should and works like what Ploki wrote then why isn't it mentioned in the manual or help file? There are plenty of things in other FF manuals/plugins that have poor or missing explanations for things that FF assumes everyone knows but that's wrong. You can never make documentation too pedantic.

Jack

Hi guys,

We'll include more detailed documentation on the different styles in the next update.
